Vegetarianism

In Hare Krishna, it is the ethical and religious principles that underlie a vegetarian diet. Animals have feelings similar to our own. They want to sleep well, mate, eat what they need and protect themselves. Unnecessary killing of animals for the sole purpose of satisfying the uncontrolled tongue is sinful. Animals raised for slaughter are often subjected to enormous suffering in the form of artificial fattening, disgusting castration, cramped living conditions, hormone therapy, and long, terrible drives to the slaughterhouse.

Animal food is not meant for humans. In order to chew solid food, humans have a special type of teeth meant for chewing fruits and vegetables. Humans are equipped with two canines as a concession to people who want to eat animal food at any cost.

All food prepared in Hare Krishna temples is first offered to the Deity on the altar. In all Vedic literature, it is prescribed that animal food should not be offered to the Lord.
